{"id":18830,"date":"2026-07-02T07:26:48","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T11:26:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/observatoireprevention.org\/?p=18830"},"modified":"2026-07-02T07:26:50","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T11:26:50","slug":"novel-findings-on-the-harmful-impact-of-pfas-on-cardiovascular-health-and-mortality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/observatoireprevention.org\/en\/2026\/07\/02\/novel-findings-on-the-harmful-impact-of-pfas-on-cardiovascular-health-and-mortality\/","title":{"rendered":"Novel findings on the harmful impact of PFAS on cardiovascular health and mortality."},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"wp-block-borealisaurora-aurora-custom-block-posts-resume\">\n    <div class=\"aurora-custom-block-posts-resume\">\n        <div class=\"container mt-4\">\n            <div class=\"title\">\n                <h2>Overview<\/h2>\n            <\/div>\n                <div class=\"content\" >\n                \n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as \u201cforever chemicals,\u201d are used in a wide range of products, including cookware, clothing, leather goods, ski wax, firefighting foams, pesticides, and more, for their non-stick, waterproofing, and water-repellent properties (they repel water, causing it to \u201cbead\u201d on the surface).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PFAS are now found in tap water and in the blood of virtually everyone tested.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two recent studies confirm the harmful impact of PFAS on both cardiovascular disease and premature mortality.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/observatoireprevention.org\/en\/2022\/07\/08\/harmful-health-effects-of-exposure-to-forever-chemicals\/\">We recently discussed<\/a>\u00a0the potential adverse health effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as \u201cforever pollutants\u201d because of their persistence in the environment. These molecules have gradually contaminated the environment, living organisms, and the entire food chain at varying concentrations. They are also found in aquatic resources, and ultimately, in tap water, as conventional water treatment systems cannot remove this form of pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, a team led by two professors of epidemiology and biostatistics from the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) published important work in the journal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0013935125020171?via%3Dihub\"><em>Environmental Research<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;linking PFAS to an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This research concludes that the risk of stroke and heart attack is increased by 10% to 28% in people who drank heavily contaminated tap water, compared to those who drank slightly polluted water. Mortality from cardiovascular disease is increased by approximately 15%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reach this conclusion, Swedish researchers assessed the tap water exposure of a cohort of over 45,000 people, all of whom lived or had lived in Ronneby, Sweden, between 1985 and 2013. In this small town in southern Sweden, two separate plants supply the population with drinking water; at that time, one drew from an aquifer polluted by fire-fighting foams used at a nearby military base, while the other drew from a much less contaminated source. Since drinking water has only recently been tested for \u201cperennial pollutants,\u201d the residents of Ronneby unwittingly became the subjects of a large-scale experiment: using their postal addresses, the researchers were able to determine which of the two plants supplied them. The first plant distributed water contaminated with approximately 10 micrograms of PFAS per litre (\u00b5g\/L), while the second distributed water at levels around 0.05 \u00b5g\/L. Because water is only one of the possible sources of contamination, the researchers took care to validate the relevance of their protocol by measuring the amount of certain pollutants in the bloodstream of 3,000 people randomly selected from the cohort. Average concentrations were approximately three to five times higher in individuals supplied by the contaminated plant than in the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers then cross-referenced this information with data from the national patient registry, which records comprehensive information on all hospitalizations since 1964 and outpatient care since 2001, as well as data from the national death registry, which has centralized records since 1952. The authors deduced a 10% increased probability of myocardial infarction, a 10% increased probability of ischemic stroke (blockage of a blood vessel supplying the brain by a clot), and a 28% increased probability of hemorrhagic stroke (rupture of a cerebral blood vessel) in individuals supplied with the most contaminated water. Consistent with these results, cardiovascular mortality was increased by 15% in these subjects in the most exposed group. It is important to remember that hemorrhagic strokes account for 20% of all strokes and are often far more fatal than ischemic strokes. But as the authors point out, the study results may underestimate the real effects of these pollutants, because the individuals in the study had the opportunity to consume heavily polluted water outside their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysis of the Ronneby population provides a new piece to the still very incomplete puzzle of disorders and diseases associated with PFAS. Until now, the most robust epidemiological information came from the so-called \u201cC8\u201d cohort, established in the early 2000s after the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/observatoireprevention.org\/en\/2022\/07\/08\/harmful-health-effects-of-exposure-to-forever-chemicals\/\">aforementioned<\/a>&nbsp;discovery of heavy contamination of the environment and populations around the DuPont plant in Parkersburg, West Virginia (USA). More recently, the large Italian study conducted in Veneto and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12940-024-01074-2\">published in 2024<\/a>&nbsp;reported cardiovascular mortality 20% to 30% higher in municipalities with high PFAS exposure compared to unexposed municipalities. This Swedish study therefore strengthens our understanding of the harmful effects of PFAS on cardiovascular health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coincidentally, a team from Harvard University published converging results this month in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/JAHA.125.046298\"><em>Journal of the American Heart Association<\/em><\/a>,&nbsp;showing that PFAS increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (+9.6%) and mortality (+3.9%) in a cohort of 1,382 prediabetic subjects followed for an average of 20 years.
